it ain’t easy…

to be married to a dispatcher…

The following is an excerpt of a typical phone conversation between me and my husband when I’m at work and he’s calling from home or his work.

“Hello- Nameless Police Department”

“yah, is Denise in?”

“hi, it’s me”

“oh… whatcha doin’?”

“sitting”  (i always say this or “working”-lol!)

“i see.  anything else?”

“surfing the internet… duh!”

“of course you are!  Hey, do you – “

“Hold on!”

Keith hears muffled radio traffic

“okay, what were you saying?”

“i wanted to know if -”

“i can’t hear you!”

“i wanted to know if- “

“Hold On again!”

more muffled radio traffic

“arrgh! <insert any cop’s name here> killing me!  okay, sorry, what were you saying?”

Keith tries speed talking now “i wanted to know if you know where the -”

“GAH! HOLD ON AGAIN!”

Keith waits impatiently on hold while I dispatch a call…

denise’s crabby voice in full swing now  “Quickly- WHAT DO YOU NEED?!?”

“nevermind, it’s not that important” [translation: it's not important enough to continue this conversation anymore]

Now, in addition to radio traffic and phones coming in, bear in mind our phones are CRAPPY – our phone guy Mike (an original PacBell guy from years past),  just informed us today that this new phone system the city bought is an IP system- meaning instead of phone lines, voice is now going over the data lines used for internet and our intranet.  Sound quality sucks.  And this is apparently ”the next big thing” as far as phone technology goes- unfortunately.   It’s cheap.  So what if the dispatcher can’t hear what you’re saying!

But i’m not the most patient soul and personal phone calls when i’m at work don’t usually last long because of the quality of the line and conversation!  My job is to deal with interruption, assess the interruption, prioritize the interruption and then resolve the interruption.  After doing this for 17 years, you’d think i’d be used to interruption by now.

So, when Keith’s one of the interruptions that gets interrupted, he gets the honest denise whose crabby self lets loose.  I just thought i let you all feel sorry for Keith today!

holey moley….

somehow my blog counter has logged 11,000 + hits!  Last time i looked, it was like, 8 or 9 k.  HOW DID I MISS THE 10,000 MARK?

I’d like to thank the cyber community for  supporting GeekSpeak and GeekStampin’ and the occasional GeekRantin’.  You are all very special to me- the ones i know about and the ones who stalk silently!  This has been a fun venture.

Now, blog candy isn’t really my thing.  It’s not that i’m cheap or don’t love you, it’s just that so many people do it already so i don’t think i can compete.  I mean- Emily Giovanni usually has the finest in blog candy offerings… how does one out-do her?  I don’t even try.  I figure you come here because i’m charming and witty and make the best projects on the planet.   Or, more likely, there’s nothing good on tv now that the writers are on strike.  But I do have some goodies available today in honor of the 11,000 + visits because… well because… i’m all verklempt!  Here they are.   Take a look.  Leave a post and i’ll use that randomizer thing other ladies use to pick a winner.  Maybe 3.

Super easy Altered Notebooks – these are kraft colored notebooks from Target- 2pack.  I used my beautiful dsp scraps and modge podge to adhere the paper.  I used the 1/4″ circle punch to punch a hole around the snap (under the snap flap).  Then the wide grosgrain from SU to finish!  DSPs are Wild Asparagus, Basic Grey and Stampin’ Up!.   So, leave a comment if you want one of these plus a little sumtin’ sumtin’ extra!  Thanks again for visiting!

bring it on, holiday season!

nov-26-2007-sf-union-sq.jpg

I’m ready for you!

This weekend, we went to see Jersey Boys at the Curran Theater in San Francisco.  Keith and I went with our friends Terry & Nanette and then met up with more friends in SF for dinner.  We all stayed at the Parc55 which is just off Union Square.  This is us at the Christmas Tree in Union Square.  Keith and I are on the left side.  Here’s another pick of the tree with Macy’s in the background.

macystree.jpg  We ate dinner at Zingari Ristorante located in the Hotel Donatello, also on Union Square.  The food was excellent- the waiter was the perfect mix of disdainful rudeness and charm.  We had some good laughs over the faces he made at us!nanetteterryjeffatzingari.jpg

We saw the show Jersey Boys at 2 in the afternoon, which was a great time to see it- no super early or super late dinners because of the evening showtimes.  The show itself wasn’t something I was really interested in seeing but once I was there, WOW!  It was a great show.  The geek in me spent most of the show marvelling at the stage manager’s ability to choreograph the set changes.  That would be the fun part of stage productions for me- set design and engineering the transitions between scenes.  Amazing job that person did.

On weekends, local artists bring their work to Union Sqare to show and hopefully sell.  We happened along a photographer named Zeny Cieslikowski  who had such amazing photographs, taken with film and not enhanced in anyway.  I fell in love with a photograph of some rowboats in Italy on a foggy morning– he waited til the sun rose and the boats and water seem to glow faintly in a sepia mist.  I bought it.  Once, many years ago, I fell in love with a photograph by LIFE photographer Carl Mydans and to this day regret not buying it.  I still think of that image, “Fog Rolls In” and hope to acquire that someday!  Fortunately Zeny’s print was under $100 so it wasn’t a hard decision and I don’t have to live with another regret.

This was a great weekend. Tomorrow I plan on getting into the lab and posting some stamping!  Gotta get working on the Christmas gifts now!

Police Briefing, 1600 hrs, Thanksgiving Day

rpdps-police.jpg

Present in Briefing: Sgt Erob, Officers Luscombe, LaBonte, Rugaard and FTOs Lawrence & Utecht and Dispatcher Hinton.

FTO= Field Training Officer.

Set Scene:  Boring white, beige and teal room with tables in a U shape.  Sgt sitting at a desk at the front of the room.

Lawrence and Hinton were apparently the only smart ones who knew which Starbucks (out of 5 in our city!) was open and we had our tasty beverages in hand. (proper prior planning).  i also had the Holiday Gingerbread waiting for me at my workstation- I LOVE CHRISTMAS TIME AT STARBUCKS!

Luscombe decides he wants coffee.  Jumps up, dashes to the kitchen and starts a pot of (imo) cheap, crappy acid water.  Luscombe comes back into the room and barks (in his unintelligble british accent)  at LaBonte, who is 3 months new to our department, “LaBonte! If you knew any better, you’d be the one starting the coffee! Expletive! Sissy Frenchie!”

To which Labonte retorts “Oh no, if you had any brains, you’d be making ME the coffee, you old man!!”

“When Snoddy was new, he was trained right!  He made the coffee even though he didn’t drink it! Then he served it to all of us in briefing.”  [Snodgrass is the officer mentioned and to my knowledge, Snoddy never brewed nor served coffee].

Somehow this ribald exchange turned into a discourse on Young, Fast LaBonte and Old, Slow Luscombe, then onto how the French in general are sissies who can’t fight.  When Luscombe had enough of LaBonte,  he started in on how the FTO’s weren’t training the rookies right and blamed it on Lawrence.  Lawrence, who’s used to Luscombe’s outbursts, just rolls his eyes.  Not satisfied with that response, Luscombe starts in on Rugaard, who happened to be having a bad hair day.  Rugaard’s meager salt and pepper hair was indeed sticking up at all sort of angles.  That also backfired on Luscombe because he shaves his head and everyone knows it’s not because he’s losing his hair, it’s because he’s too lazy to wash it and too cheap to buy shampoo.

This was our Thanksgiving Day.  We’re kinda like a large family.  Brothers picking on each other.  Sisters helping.  One of our firefighters brought over Turkey dinners for the dispatchers since we can’t leave.  The officers get to hang out with their families to eat and respond to calls when needed.   Holidays at work are pretty laid back and fun, so it makes it a little better when we have to be here and not with our families.  I just hope it stays “Q”.

Hope you all had a great holiday.  For those brave souls shopping tomorrow- may the hunt be fruitful!
