Okay, since my spark of inspiration that occurred last Tues whilst I was delivering hostess club orders all across the county, and once explained to my dear husband and he bought into it, I wasted NO time getting started. Yea, sorry for that run on sentence.
That very next day I tore into the office, moved most of the stuff to the garage sale pile, packed up the stuff I was keeping and moved everything out of the crowded closet.
Thursday I removed odd wood slats nailed to the wall inside the closet (the weird things in our 50 year old house is a whole ‘nother story!), doors, doorframes, re-drywalled the door (it’s going to just be an open doorway). I patched holes, sanded, painted the closet where the cabinetry and counter is going.
Friday, Keith and i went to Home Depot and bought the upper and lower cabinets, counter tops and random accessories that go along with that.
I will be finishing up the cabinets after work this week. I believe the craft space will be move in ready by my day off on Thursday! Keith is still broken, so he’s not truly able to do much. So this project has been mostly done by sheer determination, stubborn impatience and pure GirlPower.
Debbie, and other ladies who still have unfinished rooms with studs or insulation showing, this is for you! YOU CAN DO IT! Don’ t wait for your husbands to get around to it. Home Depot will load the truck for you, cutting drywall and nailing it up isn’t hard at all. Taping and texturing only takes patience. YOU ARE WOMAN, HEAR YOU ROAR! Pick up those power tools and get crackin’!
Seriously, you really can do it. Nevermind that I did the drywall a little bit wrong :} it will all work out fine (hee hee). You all know how to measure paper and cut, right? Well, think of it as super thick cardstock, a utility knife instead of your exacto knife and instead of inches, think feet. No big whoop. If you can set an eyelet, you can nail up wallboard.
Here’s the doorway i re-drywalled. This is the first coat of drywall compound that still needs to be sanded. However, Keith reminded me that we had agreed to put up oak trim instead of textured wall, since every door in the house is trimmed with wood. OOPS! A lot of time spent on this for no good reason.
Still, it wasn’t very difficult, so i urge you to not be afraid of installing drywall.

Here are the upper cabinets! The door still need to be tweaked and the trim/crown molding installed. They are satin white, the walls are Arabian Sand (think Creamy Caramel) and the counter will be black/bronze. The closet is 74″ wide, and 44″ inches deep- very large. It’s nice to have the closet doors off. Should have done this 5 years ago.
This was our crowded guest bedroom/office. The sofa is a queen sleeper and when it was extended, guests had about 6″ on all sides to scoot around. Pair that with the comfort of a sofa sleeper and boy, our guests were in the lap of luxury! The sofa will be moved to the living room of the granny unit soon. That wall it’s against will have built in bookcases/lateral file drawers, built by our friend who’s started his carpentry side business.

This was the JAM PACKED closet before I started Weds. UGH.
Okay, so for those of you who are inspired to get crackin’ (and i hope you are!), here’s the tutorial website I used for helping me along. It has all kinds of animated tutorials on all different home improvement projects. Go grab your hammers and drills ladies!
