Christmas Digi-Gifts revealed… and blog candy!

How was your holiday?  We have only one more day left of 2008- what are your plans for 2009?  Resolutions?  I have probably 15 resolutions – we’ll see how that goes, lol!

I’m happy to say I can share my secret Christmas gifts now, since all the recipients have theirs.  The good thing about this project is that it can be done anytime, with any theme and pics,  for anyone!  So, without further ado… I present to you my 4×6 digi-calendars!

(you could do this in regular cardstock/papers too, but i seem to be gravitating towards digi… and the great thing is i could upload these at Costco and have 15 of them in an hour- and that’s not possible with paper!)

I bought the Photoshop Elements template from Scrapgirls.com.  It’s a layered template and you just use your pics, your digi kit elements (papers, brushes -whatever you want) and clip them onto the appropriate layer.   The templates are pre-laid out, with the month, the days of the weeks and the dates – all you have to do is pick your pics and “papers”.

I found that the 4×6 cases from Flourishes were PERFECT to store all 12 months of photos- and i found them on Joan’s blog when she did the comparison of clear stamp storage options.   I did use Stampin’ Up! papers and ribbons for the belly bands.  Actually- there were a few I didn’t get pics of that included the Felt Flurries Snowflakes with Pretties brads.  In this pic, the belly band is white Taffeta ribbon with Holiday Treasures DSP.

Here are a few of the pages.  The pics i used were determined by the recipient.  Friends or co-workers got scenes from around Sonoma County that we’ve taken over the years.  The ones my family got had pics of family members on their birthday months.  Keith got a calendar using my favorite vacation photos from past and present.   It was so much fun to do!!!  Oh, i included a frame from Target that had a very narrow edge (frame).  Maybe you could call it a frameless frame?  A regular frame will have a thicker edge and would block the date portion of the calendar.

I happen to have an extra calendar handy… with frame and case.  Post a comment sharing one of your New Year’s resolutions and I’ll pick a lucky winner on Jan 1!!

Merry Twilight Christmas!!

Okay… I’m not sure why the video frame isn’t coming up on the post, I am using the code from the site… grr!  However, if you know me by now, I won’t steer ya wrong.

There is Team Edward… and Team Jacob…  and now presenting: Team Santa!

Isn’t that silly?  Hee hee….

Update on Keith- after a week of laying low, he was able to get out and finish shopping for my stocking stuffers!! Yay Keith!  He’s doing fine and has a beautiful 4.5″ scar/stitches on his left shoulder.  He has a metal plate with a “J” Hook on top of his clavicle/shoulder area and you can see it kinda.  He’s a bionic man now!

And today is officially the day to relax and prep for dinners tonight and tomorrow’s festivities.  Don’t stress!  Enjoy your day!  I’ll be here at work saving the lives of kittens in trees and whatnot, but I’m off tomorrow.  Ya, I was the dispatcher who came in at 0500 hours ON THE WRONG DAY.  And it’s not the first time…

Merry Christmas!  Happy Hannukah!

did someone say COOKIES?

Why, YES!  Someone did say cookies!

biscottibags2

Every year this time, my co-workers do a cookie exchange.  Today is cookie exchange day and here are my cookies:

Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti – dipped in more chocolate and crushed hazelnuts.  Since I’m soo nice, I have added the recipe below for the cookies.  The recipe for the toppers is as follows:

Kraft Cardstock, cut into 6″x5″ rectangles and scored at 2.5″ to fold to a 6″x2.5″ piece.  I used Chocolate Chip and SU DSP’s and Alpine Ribbon Originals from the mini catalog.

biscottibags The hanging tags say “Merry Christmas – Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti – Homemade by Denise:)” and is printed on Vanilla textured cardstock- using the Avery labels 5160 setting.  After it was printed out, I used the oval punch to punch it out.   If you do this, be sure to do a trial run on regular paper  and test your punch.  You may need to change the alignment, font or point size.  I topped it off with a flower punched in Riding Hood Red, a gold eyelet and some silver cord.  The bags are medium sized cello bags, left over from when SU carried them, with a little paper raffia at the bottom.

I can’t wait to see what my co-workers bring in… yummy!  I’m already salivating….  OH!  And here is my favorite biscotti recipe…  Thanks for stopping by and HAPPY COOKIE DAY!

Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti

4 oz      Semisweet Chocolate chips

1 c       Granulated Sugar

1 ¾ c   All Purpose Flour

1/3 c    Unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp     Baking Soda

¼ tsp    Salt

3          Eggs

1 tsp     Vanilla Extract

2 ½ c   Hazelnuts

Roast hazelnuts to remove skins- single layer on a large cookie sheet, 275 degree oven, 20-30 minutes until shells are cracked.  Remove skins by rubbing them together in a bowl lined with a rough towel.

Preheat oven to 300.  Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or waxed paper.

In a food processor fitted with the metal blade, chop the hazelnuts until small chunks appear.  Set the nuts aside in another bowl.  In the same processor, add the chocolate chips and sugar and grind until fine.  Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt and pulse until combined.  Set aside.

In the bowl of a heavy-duty mixer, combine the eggs and vanilla.  Beat at medium speed to blend.  Reduce the speed to low, add the chocolate and flour mixture and mix until a stiff dough forms, adding the hazelnuts when halfway mixed.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gather it together.  Divide in half. Form each half into a log 12” long.  Carefully transfer the logs onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly.  Pat to even up the shape.  Bake until almost firm to the touch, about 50 minutes.  Let cool for 10 minutes.  Leave the oven set at 300 degrees.

Using a spatula, transfer the logs to a work surface.  Using a serrated knife, cut on the diagonal into slices ½ – ¾ “ thick.  Return the slices, cut side down, to the baking sheet.  Bake for 25 minutes.  Turn the slices over and bake for another 25 minutes, or until crisp and dry.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.  Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one month.  Makes about 2 ½ dozen.

Optional Topping Idea:  After chopping the hazelnuts, there will be some “crumbs” – if you sift the nuts thru a wire strainer to separate the larger chunks from the finer crumbs, you can use this as a topping.  Melt 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips in a double boiler- dip one side of the biscotti in the melted chocolate and then immediately into the crumbs. Set on parchment paper or waxed paper and chill for 30 min or until set.  You can then store as mentioned above.

so what’s the deal

with Facebook, anyway?

I am not sure why I’m there.  There are people on there that throw snowballs at me, or kidnap me… or want me to plant a tree in a virtual green space.  I joined up because Keith did- and only because he had to for a work related thing (well, union related thing) and they haven’t even used it – they are still just emailing info!  And so I’ll get the occasional “so and so wants to be your  friend” on my cellphone.  Two nights ago while shopping at Target- Keith had my cellphone.  He saw a text that said “so and so from Cleveland, OH wants to be your friend”.  He was all… “Hmmm…Denise doesn’t know anyone in Ohio… ” SO HE DENIED THE REQUEST!  Um… honey?  I do TOO know people from Ohio.  Lots in fact.  And from Virginia, Washington, Kansas, Chile… jeez.   Now they must think i’m a total bitch!!

How are people finding the time for this stuff?  I know for a fact that several snowballers/tree planters/kidnappers are also Splitcoasters, and on design teams for stamp companies such as Unity, My Favorite Things and the like.  Not to mention, they are also mothers, shoppers, work full time and basically post like madwomen in all the places mentioned. They also CREATE LIKE MADWOMEN and always have great projects on their blogs.  I CAN’T EVEN GET MY FREAKIN’ CHRISTMAS CARDS DONE!  I’d like whatever clock they’re using please.  Oh… wait.  I get it.  Their houses are disasters and their kids are starving… right? :D

In other news, Keith goes in for surgery this Monday morning.  His broken shoulder has never healed.  At all.  The ortho-doc thought that in time it would knit back together but it hasn’t.  So now we get to go in 8 months later for the fun of surgery.  Can you believe he backpacked all thru Europe with a broken collarbone?  He’s a freakin’ stud.  Until Tuesday when he comes home anyway.  Then you know what that’ll look like….  “Honey?  Can i have some soup?  Can you fluff my pillow?  Can you rub my back?  Can you come when i ring the bell and do whatever i bid you to do?”

I do plan on getting my Christmas baking done while he recuperates.  And painting my office/craft space… finally.  I’m STILL WAITING for my outlets to be installed at my craft counter.  Hence, no completed craft space pictures yet.  However, Rhonda (my former sister-wife who used to live in our granny unit until she bought her own house less than a mile away) and I went to Ikea last Tuesday and helped save the economy.  My office is getting closer to perfection!  12-10_4190

12-10_4187

The bookcase under the window is the exact width of the window.  Originally i wanted a tall bookcase with glass doors, but the one i wanted was 1″ too wide and then we saw this bookcase!  Get OUT!  It’s from the Markor line and Rhonda ended up purchasing the same line, but bookcases i wanted as well as the media stand.  She hasn’t attempted to put it together yet.

Oh, another funny thing… and i wish i had a picture…. she picked me up at 0830 hrs that morning and we were wearing THE EXACT SAME OUTFIT.  Black V-Neck Sweaters, dark blue jeans, blk shoes and a white down vest.  Our purses were even similar (she had a Coach, mine 9-West, but both were black patterned cloth trimmed in black leather and silver).  Since we met in another town, there was no changing clothes for either of us. OMG!

We spent the entire day at Ikea.  We ate 2 meals there.  We gave some serious thought to our purchases.  We loaded her sister’s Nissan Pathfinder to the extreme.  We bought cinnamon rolls and coffee for the car ride  home.  And we single-handedly saved California from bankruptcy.  I sincerely hope Arnold Schwarzenegger sends us a Christmas card for our efforts.

So that’s what I’ve been doing instead of crafting.  Figuring out Facebook, shopping at Ikea  with my twin/sister-wife and prepping for the impending surgery.  Oh, and i am done with Christmas shopping… yay!  So stand by for next week’s baking and stories about my indentured servitude.  Hey, Keith will be fine and i got time off for family sick at Christmas time, who’s complainin’?

stuck between a rock

and a hard place.

First- I’m totally ROCKIN’ on my holiday gifts… but I can’t show you here!  Can you believe the irony of this?  I could say “Family and Friends- don’t look at my blog” but that would be everyone and what would be the point of posting, eh?

I will show one little bitty thing which is no biggie to share before the 25th- and that’s my digi-Christmas Card.

christmaspostcard2008

Shorter than a newsletter, but includes an updated pic and a brief highlight of our year within a 4×6 print - and it’s frameable since everyone who gets one will no doubt have it front & center on their mantle.

Hmm… wonder if i should make it 8×10 instead… hee hee!

DigiKit Details:   Red snowflake paper,  kraft paper tag and snowflake- MBennett’s “Sleighride” from Sweet Shoppe Designs, Circle of dots- “Joyful” by Fee Jardine (Sweet Shoppe Designs),  Stitched paper photo corner- LWeifenbach’s “Fifteen“, also from Sweet Shoppe Designs and the Postcard base is Penny’s Miscellany “Be Merry Tropical” (one of my first digi-kits!).  Font is CKDearMissRose.
